Where can I get tested for HIV?

You’ve decided to get tested for HIV which is a great move for your health! Find out the different places you can go to to get tested.

1. Clinic or hospital

A lot of people get an HIV test at the local clinic or hospital, where it is always free.

2. Pharmacy

You can also go to the pharmacy to test for HIV. Testing is not free at the pharmacy but you won’t have to wait too long to get tested because you set an appointment.

3. Doctor

There are different places you can go to for HIV testing and your doctor is one option. Testing at your doctor is not free but you won’t have to wait too long because you can also set an appointment. 

4. HIV self-testing

You can also do an HIV self-test using either saliva or a drop of blood. You can use the test in private.

There are also other places that offer HIV testing services as well:

Maternity clinics – Pregnant women get an HIV test at the maternity clinic when they go for their check-ups. It’s the best way to keep both mother and baby healthy. 

Drug and alcohol rehab centers – Drug and alcohol rehab centers in your community may offer HIV testing. If you’re already attending or planning to attend one, ask the staff. 

Specialist HIV/Sexual health services – You may have seen tents or mobile clinics in your community that offer HIV testing. If there’s one in your area, it can be a quick and convenient way to get tested. 

Youth/Community centres  – You can get tested at some youth and community centres. If you’re already going to one, just ask the staff. If they don’t offer HIV testing, they may be able to tell you where else you can go.
