What is thrush?
Thrush is an infection caused by a fungus called candida. Candida lives in the vagina and gut (stomach). Certain medicines like antibiotics, stress, high sugar from diabetes and other factors like vaginal douching or wearing tight underwear can cause the fungus to grow more than it should, which is when a thrush can start. Vaginal douching is when you use feminine hygiene products to wash your vagina.
What does thrush look like?
- Thrush can cause itching and irritation of the lips of the vagina and inside the vagina.
- Pain when you pee.
- Pain when having sex.
- A white-creamish discharge which can be thick and look a bit like cottage cheese.
How do I test for thrush?
A healthcare provider will usually recognise this infection by examining you. Further tests are not normally necessary.
How is thrush treated?
It is treated with medication you put into the vagina and around the vaginal lips, which usually comes in the form of a cream. It can also be treated by a pill which you swallow.
